ADMA Challenge Series points championship heads for the home stretch

Fairbanks, Alaska—Most of the ADMA Challenge Series points championships will be decided on the last weekend of racing on Sunday, February 2nd. Five of the seven classes have fewer than two points separating the top competitors. One exception is the 6-dog class where Carol Kleckner extended her lead to four points over Carol Kaynor. Kleckner has clinched at least a tie in the 6-dog title as long as she finishes next week's race, despite racing all three races with only five dogs. Lynn Orbison is well on her way to defending her 8-dog title with a five point lead, unbeatable unless she does not finish next week's race and Bonnie Borba or Wendy Callis, currently tied for second with 7 points each, wins.

Scott Campbell is giving Carol Kleckner tough competition in the 4-dog class, having won two out of three of their meetings to take a one point lead into the final weekend. Eric Lanser moved to the top of the standings in the Open class with Arleigh Reynolds only two points behind after class leader Stacy Church dropped down to race 8-dog this week.

Cindy Salmon and Carol Kleckner have traded wins during the first three races in the three-dog skijoring class and are separated by a single point. Steven Sheehy holds a two-point lead over Dave Partee in the two-dog skijoring class after winning the last two races. His cushion might have been even greater if he hadn't missed his start time at the first Challenge Race. In the one-dog skijor class, Mike Malvick has parleyed three consecutive second place finished into a one point lead over Chris Terzi, who won the first Challenge Race, and a two-point lead over Kriya Dunlap who has won the last two races after missing the first one.

Watch for spoilers inserting themselves between top competitors at the final Challenge Series race next Sunday. Challenge Series race #5, scheduled for next Sunday, February 2nd, is sponsored by Prospector Outfitters.

The skijor classes will have extra interest next weekend because the last Challenge Series Race is also the final stage of the Alaska Skijor and Pulk Association's 4-day Race Across the Valley Stage Race. The Race Across the Valley allows three dogs per stage drawn from a five-dog pool for the event. Some competitors will have to decide whether to forego Challenge Series Points in the 1- or 2-dog class to remain in the hunt for the Race Across the Valley title by stepping up to the 3-dog class, opening the door for someone else to win the 1- or 2-dog Points Title. For some, the decision will be made Saturday night based on their standing after the first three days of the Race Across the Valley.

Last year's defending Challenge Series Points Champions are Lynn Orbison (8-dog), Trisha Seibold (6-dog), Mike Malvick (4-dog and 1-dog skijor), Dave Partee (2-dog skijor) Jim Herriges (3-dog skijor).
