Lee's Cabin Race a Thigh-Burner
submitted by Chris DuBois
Alaska Skijoring and Pulk Association (ASPA) skijorers shined at the open
class 14-mile Lee's Cabin Fun Run on Saturday morning at the White Mountain Recreation Area. Nine skijorers and 19 dogs were treated to clear windless skies and crisp 10 degree temperatures. The bumpy Wickersham Creek Trail presented all nine teams, from Fairbanks and Anchorage, with a thigh burning 14-mile trip into Lee's Cabin and back. The cabin is the halfway turnaround point where skijorers water and treat their dogs, then warm up to the traditional homemade chili, hot drinks and conversation. After a one-hour break, the teams were restarted in 2 minute intervals returning to the Wickersham Dome Trailhead. ASPA president, Jim Herriges, took first place honors with a blazing 49 minute run. Second place went to Anchorage skijorer, Kris Rasey at 1 hour 6 minutes and 35 seconds. Maggie Hollam of Fairbanks placed third just three minutes and six seconds behind Kris.ASPA thanks all nine participants for racing and Cheryle and Steve Barrett for starting the race and timekeeping.
The open 32-mile Moose Creek Fun Run is scheduled for February 10, 2001. A Lee's Cabin option and Show 'n' Go will also be offered.
