Stage 1, January 26, 2001
Ivory Jack's Loop 
(10 miles, 30º F)

Stage one of this year's ASPA Race Across the Valley Stage Race was held on Friday afternoon in Goldstream Valley.  The race trail covered a 10 mile loop starting and finishing at Ivory Jack's.  The narrow, hard, and often bumpy trail provided skijorers with a variety of challenges.  Some racers took a creative approach. Yoshi Nishiyama started the race with one dog, Sweetie, but La-ana DeWild Lydic was kind enough to lend him one of her three along the way, so they finished with an even two each.  Sharon Isaacson's three dogs ran abreast, with just enough room on Goldstream's narrow trails.  Mike Malvick won the leg with a time of 38:58.  As another racer whom he passed on the trail put it after the race, "Mike, you were smoking!"  Paul Gregory's time of 49:27 was good enough to secure second place, while Julie Rowland took third in 53:25.  Despite running only one dog, Gail Davidson finished in the middle of the field in fourth place.

Stage 2, January 27, 2001
East Goldstream Valley 
(8 miles, 25º F)

Stage two of this year's ASPA Race Across the Valley Stage Race was held on Saturday afternoon in Goldstream Valley.  The race trail covered an eight-mile mile loop starting and finishing at the pullout on the east side of Ballaine near the Goldstream Creek bridge.

Mike Malvick faced a stiffer challenge on Saturday, but held on to claim his second stage win.  He edged Jim Herriges by 45 seconds and Patricia Baer by a little more than a minute.

The sixteen teams that competed in Saturday's race had to contend with some overflow and missing trail signs on a course that included part of the Snowhookians dog mushing trails and the old Tanana Valley Railroad route.

Stage 3, January 28, 2001
Two Rivers Nordic Ski Trails 
(7.5K or 15K, 20º F)

Stage three of this year's ASPA Race Across the Valley Stage Race was held on Sunday afternoon on the Two Rivers Nordic Ski Trails.  A 7.5K Fun Run was held in conjunction with Stage Race.  

Last night's snow and early morning grooming provided excellent conditions on the steep and windy trails. Many thanks to the Two Rivers Recreation area for letting us use the trails for the first ever skijor race there.  Today's racers completed a course of 14 km by doing the entire 7.5 km of trails twice (minus 1 km to avoid coming all the way back into the stadium).  Jim Herriges took first with a time of 38:45 followed closely by Mike Malvick in 40:28.  George Salmon was third in 43:30.  

ASPA also offered a fun race today of 7.5 km which drew six racers. This race was won by La-ona DeWilde Lydic in 26:09.  

Four racers competed in the entire Race Across the Valley Series.  Mike Malvick easily won the three-day event with a cumulative time of one hour, 52 minutes and 15 seconds.
