Fun Race #0, 4 degrees F, light
snow falling
Results for January 4, 2004
Unexpected warm weather and great trails made a pleasant make-up date for ASPA's Fun Race #0, though conditions did leave some skiers scratching their heads wondering what the right wax should have been. Some competitors chose to use Saturday's race as a training run for ADMA's event on Sunday.
A game of leapfrog marked the season's first 8.6 mile class. Cindy Salmon with Solo, Sumo, and Sockeye, and Mike Malvick with Corky, Ingrid, and Jack, chased each other around the 8.6 mile loop. Cindy caught Mike about four miles into the course and Mike followed until he repassed her when the teams reentered Creamer's Field Cindy's team got tangled up after nearly missing a turn. Cindy finished first in 31:56, followed by Mike in 32:46, when their times were corrected for the one-minute start interval.
Steven Sheehy with Ahi and Moxie placed first in the 5.6 mile two-dog class and Jim Altherr with Sophie placed first in the 5.6 mile one-dog class.
The 3.5 mile class was the most popular of the day with a total of 8 participants. Kimberlee Beckmen won the two-dog class with Terri and Morris in 13:38. Peggy Raybeck with Joan and Smokey came in second with 17:57, and Steve Corven with Max and Funny rounded out the top three in 19:13. John Hallsten and Chipper finished first in the one-dog class with a time of 15:25. Andy Warwick and Zip chased John across the finish line to place second in 15:30. Tone Deehr and Socrates came in third with a time of 17:33.
Janet Smith won the 2.7 mile two-dog class, finishing with Buckwheat and Rascal in 11:40. Charles Deehr with Tor and Aven came in second in 13:52 and Clarice Dukeminier with Crisco and Kanuti were third in 16:07. Lisa Baraff and Hope finished a strong first in the 2.7 mile one-dog competition with a time of 14:22. Diann Darnall and Nikki placed second in 17:58 and Jeff McBride with Kodi were third in 19:04.
Janet Smith with Big Pete and Skeeter won the 1.4 mile two-dog class, finishing in 5:58. Pat DeRuyter and Bandit crossed the finish line in 7:52 to place first in the 1.4 mile one-dog class. Magnus Guthfeldt, a visitor from New York participating in his first skijor event with a borrowed dog, Molly were second with a time of 9:53 and Molly Patton with Daisy edged out Miranda Terwilliger to place third in 10:23.
Thank you Toni DeRuyter, Betsey Jacobs, Jamie Marschner and Pat DeRuyter for their help with the race. Thank you to Peggy Raybeck for her fantastic job of trail grooming on the ASPA trails. Thanks, too, to the ADMA trail groomers for grooming the 19-mile loop this morning.
The next ASPA sponsored race will be the Lee's Cabin Race on February 7, 2004. Check the ASPA hotline at 457-5456 for more information.

Fun Race #3,
-10 degrees F
Results for December 14
The third ASPA Fun Race of 2003 was a record-breaking event. It drew the second highest turnout for a fun race in the history of ASPA with 45 participants. Five season records were also set on Sunday, two of which were set by Janet Smith who was participating in her first fun race of the year. A 5.6-mile class was offered for the first time this year creating confusion for some as skijorers and dogs broke from the norm and created their own versions of the course.
In the longest distance and with the most dogs, Mike Malvick with Corky, Billie, and Ingrid took first place in the 5.6 mile, three-dog class, setting a season record with his 19:05 finish time, missing the course record by only three seconds. Cindy Salmon with Tex, Coho, and Solo came in second in 20:33. Sami, Da Moose, and Wings pulled Rick Reznak across the finish line to place third in 21:03. In the two-dog class Kriya Dunlap with Oban and Brahma posted the fastest time and a course record in the 5.6-mile class in 18:37. Carol Kleckner with Daikon and Robin claimed second place in 20:56 and Jim Herriges finished two seconds later with Vinnie and Bouy in 20:58. Gail Davidson with Tobi had the fastest time and a season record in the one-dog class, finishing in 25:55. Jennifer Wenrick and Sadie placed second in 31:30, and Jim Altherr with Sophie rounded out the top three in 37:56. George Salmon and Andy Seitz created their own classes after taking a wrong turn out on the course.
In the 2-dog 3.5 mile class Steven Sheehy with Ahi and Terry came in first in 13:34. Tone Deehr followed close behind taking second in 14:00 with Socrates and Hobbes. Mckenzie Brooks with Ramy and Cashew crossed the finish line one second later in 14:01. John Hallsten with Chipper took first place in the 1-dog 3.5 mile class, crossing the finish line in 14:46.
The 2.7 mile two-dog class was the largest of the day with twelve competitors. Placing first and knocking ten seconds off the course record was Janet Smith with Skoki and Diamond in 9:13. Jim Herriges with Lily and Ole was close behind taking second in 9:17. Iris Wood was third in her class pulled across the finish line in 10:47 by Smokey and Jake.
In the 2.7 mile class with one dog, Andy Warwick and Zip were two seconds from the season record with a time of 12:49. Sean Neilson and Pablo took second place with a time of 14:12 and Jeff McBride with Kodi was third in 20:31.
Janet Smith set a new course record for the 2003-2004 season in the 1.4 mile two-dog class, crossing the finish line with Ruby and Pete in an astonishing 4:58. Rick Reznak with Isabelle and Jasper were second in 5:13, with Ed Bueler, Maggie, and Fern crossing the finish line 13 seconds later for third place in 5:26. Carol Kleckner and Jazz broke the season record in the one-dog class, placing first in 5:11. Peggy Raybeck and Bandit were second in 6:10 and Jeff Oatley with Harriet came in at 7:00 to place third.
A big thank you to all of the volunteers that helped make the race possible: A.J. Sutton, Chris Terzi, Toni DeRuyter, Pat DeRuyter, Betsy Jacobs and Jamie Marschner. Fun Race #0 cancelled earlier in the year will be rescheduled as the weather permits. Check the ASPA hotline at 457-5456 for information.

Fun Race #2, -8 degrees F
Results for November 30, 2003
Thirty-one participants and five volunteers braved the cold temperatures
and slow snow conditions to make ASPA's second Fun Race of the winter a great one. As Pat DeRuyter was grooming Creamer's field, she noticed that even moose make use of the trails. A cow and two calves were kind enough to watch from the woods while the skijorers took their turn on the trails.Kriya Dunlap with Oban and Brahma took first place in the 3.5 mile, 2-dog
class, finishing in 11:53. Sumo and Humpy brought Cindy Salmon across the finish line to place second in 13:37. Steven Sheehy with Ahi and Blu rounded out the top three with a time of 13:50. Fun Race #1, 10 degrees F
Results for November 23, 2003
There were a record number of participants in the first ASPA fun race of the season. Humans and Canines were delighted with the significant early snowfall. The hard work by ASPA trail groomers made the race possible.
They put in many hours repairing damage done by a four-wheeler Saturday night and Sunday morning. The first race of the year usually produces some interesting results, emphasizing the "fun" in fun race. Heading out sixth, Kriya Dunlap tested her passing skills while running the last 2 miles of the 2.7 mile loop in the wrong direction. Andy Warwick demonstrated tremendous balance crossing the finish line snowboarding on one ski after losing his other in a fall.
The 2.7 mile, 2-dog class was most popular with 12 participants. Carol Kleckner, with Robin and Chanel, lead the pack posting a finish time of 10:40. Close on her heels Kriya Dunlap, with Oban and Brahma, finished her loop in 10:44. In 11:33, Mike Malvick, with Corky and Mons, came in third.
Cindy Salmon led by Chinook took first place in the 2.7 mile, 1-dog class with a time of 12:47. Chad Carroll with Tico came in second with a time of 13:26. Gail Davidson and Tobi the Wonderdog posted a third place finish in 13:37.
Carol Kleckner swapped Robin and Chanel for Loon and Millie to won her second race of the day, finishing the 1.4 mile race with a time of 6:02. Finishing second in the two dog class was Steve Corven with Max and Tenzing in 7:08. Aaron Hawkins racing Key and Lao posted a third place time of 7:17.
It was a close race among the nine competitiors the 1.4 mile, 1-dog class. Gail Davidson and Tobi won their second race of the day in 7:41. Sara Elzey and Shadow edged out the competition to place second in 8:07. One second later Peggy Raybeck with Smokey and Andy Warwick (on one ski) with Zip crossed the finish line to tie for third with a time of 8:08.
John Eichelberger with Maggie chased Tobi and Gail around the 0.5 mile loop in 2:33 to take first place. Christian Rixen and Pancit came in second with a time of 3:23. Denise Falzone with help from Clarice Dukeminier who captured Denise's loose dog, Lakota, finished in third place in 7:31. In a time of 3:47 with two dog and a wrong turn Bittner Brooks with McKinley and Sherwood made their own 0.5 mile, 2 dog class.
The next ASPA Fun Race will be held at the Creamer's Field trails on Sunday, November 30, 2003. Registration is at 11:30, race draw at 12:10 and racing starts at 12:30. Call 479-7853 for more information or to volunteer to help with the race.
