Thirty-three participants came to the help top off a fantastic year for the Alaska Skijor and Pulk Association. Three records were broken Sunday afternoon on the Jeff Studdert trails.  Andy Seitz had a fantastic day, winning and setting track records in two of the three events he participated in.

Nineteen people participated in the annual LeMans start 1-mile event. In this event skiers start thirty feet from a central ski drop zone where the skis have been placed. At the start all the skiers with one dog each run to the zone where they step into their skis and begin the one mile loop.  Mike Malvick was first out of the pack with Andy Seitz a close second.  Seitz passed Malvick, only to be repassed 100 feet from the finish.  Malvick has won two of the last three LeMans events, this year posting a LeMans track record of 4:01.  Seitz crossed the line 5 seconds later and Carol Kleckner came in third with a time of 4:27.

Andy Seitz with Yeller, Mabel and Ed took first place in the 7.7 mile class with a record breaking time of 25:59.  Matt Bray with Kayak, Gilbert, and Sullivan came in second in 32:19.

Janet Smith with Skeeter and Spanky won the 5.9 mile two-dog class with a time of 22:57. Mara Bacsujlaky with her Second Chance league dogs, Frosty and Hershey crossed the line in 27:57 for second place.

In the 5.9 mile one-dog class Chad Carroll and Tico took first place with a time of 25:27. Sandra Malvick and Mons came in second in her first race of the season in 28:12.

Half of the competitors in the 4.5 mile class took a shortcut and joined the 3.7 mile competition. Carol Kleckner found the correct turn and placed first in the three-dog 4.5 mile category with Robin, Chanel, and Crowe in 14:34.  Peggy Raybeck with Smokey and Bandit claimed first prize in the two-dog division with a time of 18:25. John Hallsten and Chipper came in first in the 1-dog class in 20:36.

The 3.7 mile class was the largest of the day with 16 competitors. Andy Seitz broke his second record of the day, placing first in the three-dog competition with Yeller, Mabel, and Yeti in 11:32. Rick Reznak with Sami,Wings and DaMoose were second in 12:41. Sara Elzey with Shadow, Myst and Ayla were a mere 6 seconds later to place third.

Sara Elzey came back to win the 3.7 mile two-dog competition in 13:14, this time with Daikon and Raisin.  Iris Wood with Turbo and Blue came in a close second, finishing just two seconds later. Bittner Brooks, one of the youngest competitors of the day placed third, crossing with Remy and Sherwood in 16:32.  Nancy Cook and Saami won the one-dog competition with a time of 18:13.  Lisa Baraff and Hope were second in 18:41, and Jessica Larsen with Villa rounded out the top three in 19:29.

Carol Kleckner, competing in her third event of the day, and Loon won the 1 mile one-dog competition, finishing in 4:01. Amanda Byrd and Taka placed second with a time of 5:08. Ted Wu with Lucy were third, crossing the finish line in 5:17.

The final ASPA fun race of the season was followed by a general membership meeting which saw the departure of President Pat DeRuyter.  Jamie Marshner was nominated and elected to fill the position.  Carol Kleckner will join the ASPA board with returning members: Amanda Byrd, Amy Carroll, Gail Davidson, Toni DeRuyter, Chris DuBois, Sara Elzey, Jim Herriges, Mike Malvick, Cindy Salmon, and Janet Smith.  Mike Malvick and Toni DeRuyter were voted volunteers of the year. Tone Deehr and Peggy Raybeck were also nominated and recognized for their considerable contributions. A total of 48 volunteers were recognized for ASPA contributions during the 2003-2004 season.

Many volunteers helped make today's event so successful.  Amanda Byrd and Toni DeRuyter ran the registration table and Tom McGrane, Toni DeRuyter, and  Jamie Marschner did timing and PA announcements.  Starting line and dog handling assistance were provided by AJ Sutton, Laura Thompson, Cindy Salmon, and Tom McGrane.  Event photography was done by  Chuck Deehr, Tone Deehr, Pat DeRuyter, Mike Malvick, and Lisa Baraff.  Barbecue grill were provided by Chuck Deehr and Chris DuBois and the cooking was performed by Chez Chris DuBois and Chez Clarice Dukeminier.  Prize drawings were done by Victoria Malvick, Isabelle Malvick and Gabrielle Dumas.  The Mushers' Hall clean-up was performed by John Hallsten Carol Hoewisch, Sara Elzey, Janet Smith, and Pat DeRuyter.

Photos (from top to bottom):  Victoria an d Isabelle Malvick found a good vantage point from which to watch their mother Sandra Malvick finish the 5.9 mile 1-dog race.  Amanda Byrd, Miranda Terwilliger, and Chad Carroll start the LeMans race tightly grouped.  Jim Altherr and McKenzie Brooks finish the LeMans race.  Mike Malvick and Corky sprint to the finish to win the LeMans race.  Chad Carroll and Tico race to first place in the 5.9 mile 1-dog class.  Chuck Deehr works hard with his team of Siberian huskies near the finish of the 5.9 mile 2-dog race.  (Photos by Pat DeRuyter).  Carol Kleckner has a tough decision to make as she selects a prize for one of her two victories on the day as Pat and Toni DeRuyter announce the results.  Posing for their own version of American Gothic, Chris DuBois and Clarice Dukeminier make sure no burger or brat is served before its time.  (Photos by Mike Malvick)
