ASPA 2004-2005 Fun Race Results

A high turnout and an abundance of close races helped make ASPA’s first fun race of the 2004-2005 season a success. Thirty-Nine participants turned out to take advantage of the beautiful trails and warm weather. It was a great showing for Second Chance League (SCL) dogs as Carol Kleckner claimed two first place finishes showcasing 2 dogs still looking for homes.

The 3.5 mile, 2-dog class was the most popular with 9 competitors, Andy and Susan Seitz went one-two in the event. Andy, with Yeller and Yeti, finished in 12:11, edging out Susan, who followed with Ed and Mabel and crossed the finish line in 12:44. Kimberlee Beckman came in third with Iris and Terri in 13:52. Brian Charlton, a new member, had a fine showing for his first race, coming in fourth with Sally and Boots in 14:29.

Less than a minute separated the top three finishers in the 3.5 mile, 1-dog class. Jess Ryan and Lena Bean came across the finish line first in 14:31. Chad Carroll and Tico came across a mere 15 seconds later (in 14:46) to take second place. Jim Herriges and Ole were third with a time of 15:15.

The 2.7 mile, 2-dog class had the most exciting finish of the afternoon. Carol Kleckner ran Blackberry (SCL) and Galena to a first place finish in 10:34, only 2 seconds ahead of Sara Elzey. Sara crossed the finish line with Shadow and Ayla in 10:36. Iris Wood rounded out the top three with Smokey and Midnight in 12:37. The 2.7 mile, 1-dog class also had a close finish. Janet Smith and Skeeter were only 14 seconds ahead of the closest competition when they crossed the finish line in 12:22. Lisa Baraff and Hope were right behind, taking second place in 12:36. Jana McAninch and Atsaq crossed in 14:25 to place third in their first race as new members of ASPA.

In the 1.5 mile, 2-dog class Carol Kleckner claimed her second first place finish of the day. Carol with Misty (SCL) and Robin crossed the finish line in 5:53. In the 1.5 mile, 1-dog class Sara Elzey and Myst came in first with a time of 6:21. Kristi Downing and Lanky were second in 7:43, just ahead of Pat DeRuyter and Crisco who crossed in 7:56 for third place. Pat DeRuyter finished her first race, ran to the truck to switch dogs and was off to run the 0.5 mile race with one dog. Pat and Kanuti finished first in 3:37.

ASPA is offering a new AARP class this year. Event coordinators are keeping track of the speed of the competitors and giving prizes for those who are the fastest. In the AARP 2-dog class Carol Kleckner won with an average speed of 15.4 mph in her 2.7 mile event. Peggy Raybeck averaged 14.0 mph over 3.5 miles and Tone Deehr placed third with an average of 12.5 mph over 2.7 miles. In the AARP 1-dog class Gail Davidson and Tobi the Wonderdog averaged 14.0 mph over 3.5 miles to place first. John Hallsten was second with 13.0 mph over 3.5 miles. Pat DeRuyter rounded out the top three AARP finishers with an average speed of 11.3 mph.

ASPA would like to thank the volunteers that helped to make this event possible. Kristi Downing, Chuck Deehr and Clarice Dukeminier helped with registration. A.J. Sutton helped as a dog handler at the starting line. Chuck and Clarice sorted out dogs and humans as timers and recorders at the finish line. Sara Elzey led the field with two first place record setting finishes. Sara with Shadow and Ayla won the 2.7 mile 2-dog race in a season record time of 10:24. Andy Seitz (Avril and Miley) came in second at 10:37. Carrie Barta with Dream and Mojave were third at 11:16.

Sara Elzey and Myst won and set a record in the 1.5 mile 1-dog class with a time of 6:11. Heather Best and Hadley were second at 6:17. Jeff Oatley and Harriet rounded out the top three at 6:28.

Carol Kleckner was also a multiple winner running a Second Chance League dog in each event. Carol with Blackberry and Robin won the 3.6 mile 2-dog class with a time of 12:47. Jennifer Seitz with Ed and Mabel were second at 12:56 and Andy Warwick with Zip and Licorice were a close third at 12:59. Andy lost valuable time on a tangle with another team in the East Field.

Carol Kleckner (Misty and Chanel) set a new season record in the 1.5 mile 2-dog class with a time of 5:11. Don Kiely with Izzi and Raisan were second at 5:45.

In the first running of the 5.6 mile class for this season, Mike Malvick with Ingrid, Billie and Mesa came in first with a time of 22:28 in the 3-dog class. Greg Seitz with Yeller and Yeti were first in the 2-dog class with a distance best time of 21:07. Gail Davidson and Tobi won the 1-dog class with a time of 29.43.

Rick Reznak (Sami, DaMoose and Wings) won the 3.6 mile 3-dog class with a time of 12:44.

Lisa Baraff and Hope won the 3.6 mile 1-dog class in a time of 15:38. John Hallsten with Chipper and Sandra Malvick with Mons tied for second with a time of 15:46.

John Eichelberger and Maggie came in first in the 2.7 mile 1-dog class with a time of 27:04. We think Maggie enjoys the scenery at Creamer's Field.

Andy Warwick and Ship set a season record in the 0.5 mile 1-dog class with a time of 2.38. Tom Lyngholm with Louise were second at 3:04. Ariana Graf and Uma in their first skijor race were third in a time of 3:09

Carol Kleckner with Chanel and Misty improved their speed in the AARP 2-dog division by 2 ½ mph to a speed of 17.36mph. John Hallsten and Chipper led the 1-dog AARP dividion with a speed of 13.7mph.

ASPA thanks trail groomers Peggy Raybeck, Pat DeRuyter and John Hallsten for trail work this week. Volunteers for Fun Race #2 were Toni Hawkins, A.J. Sutton, Clarice Dukeminier, Kristi Downing, Miranda Terwilliger and Pat DeRuyter.
