Fun Race #1, +5 °F
Results for 12/18/05, Rescheduled from November 20
Story by Carol Kleckner

Fun Race #1 was originally scheduled for November 20, but was postponed due to cold temperatures.  Nineteen  people and 35 dogs participated on trails made ice skate rink slick by the recent warm weather. The participants gave huge thanks to all the trail groomers who were out as late as Sunday morning getting the trail in the best racing shape possible given the conditions. In asking after the race for any trail stories, the most popular reaction was "it was scary."

At least 16 of the 35 dogs racing today were adopted from animal shelters or rescue organizations. Most are Alaska huskies, but several Golden Retrievers have found their true calling as skijoring dogs.  Forget diving after birds in cold water....they love to run the trails pulling their owners on one of the shortest days of winter.

The 3.6 mile 2-dog class was won by Chad Carroll with Penny and Tico (11:42), followed by Carol Kleckner with Borax and Misty (12:17). 3rd place went to Amanda Byrd with Barat and Wanda (12:20). Rounding out the class was David Avery with Tucker and Huey in their first skijor race (14:22).

The 3.6 mile 1-dog class was the largest of the day. The top 4 times were within 15 seconds of each other. Andy Warwick with Zip sped around the course in 14:13 followed by Ted Wu with Ty in 14:23. Sven Grage and Reed were close behind in 14:27 with Kimberlee Beckman and Iris a second behind in 14:28. Lisa Baraff and Hope were 5th in 15:35. A total of 8 racers competed in this class.

The 2.7 mile 2 dog class was led by Sara Elzey with Ayla and Chert in 10:22. Don Kiely with Casper and Daikon was 2nd in 11:00. Rounding out the class was Iris Wood with Fox and Eagle in 11:46 and Marya Lewanski with Blaze and Nellie in 12:49.

Andy Warwick won his 2nd race of the day in the 2.7 mile 1 dog class with Licorice in 12:19. David French was close behind with Boone in 12:26 and 3rd place went to Daniel Carlson with Sky in 12:42.

Amanda Byrd in her 2nd race of the day led the 1.4 mile 2 dog class with Tas and Miley in 4:51.  Sara Elzey , also running her 2nd race of the day, was 2nd with Myst and Shadow in 5:45.

Sunnifa Deehr with Leap and Cicero was 3rd in 5:56 after also finishing the 2.7 mile trail with 1 dog.

Fun Race #2
Results for 1/1/06
Story by Amanda Byrd

There was no rest for the wicked when the Alaska Skijor and Pulk Association held their Fun Race #2 on New Years Day.  The race was actually the 4th in the series, having been rescheduled from an earlier and colder day in the season.

Fifteen weary skijorers and 26 dogs brought in 2006 under clear skies and a chilly -11F at Creamers Field racing in events covering 1.4, 2.7 and 3.6 miles. While the trails were fast and relatively smooth, some skijorers had less than smooth runs.

Making to the start line, while not normally a judged event, earned a few racers prizes for their Elegance (Carol Kleckner smoothing out a potential tangle with an artistic swoop of an arm), Special Effects (Iris Wood for reaching the start line in a cloud of flying snow) and Murphy's Award, when Sara Elzey's dog Chert slipped both its harness and collar within 3 seconds of their start.

The 3.6 mile 2-dog race was relatively uneventful and quickly won by Andy Warwick skiing behind Zip and Licorice (11:55), followed by Amanda Byrd with Borat and Wanda (12:17), Iris Wood with Swimmer and Pluto (13:36), Steve Sheehy with Terri and Sputnick and rounding out the field was Carol Kleckner with Crowe and Blackberry (14:30).

Ted Wu and Ty won the 1-dog race over 3.6 miles (14:02) followed by Kimberlee Beckman and Iris (15:12), Lisa Baraff and Hope (16:17) and Jim Altherr and Sophie came in at 20:29.

Don Kiely was not satisfied with a simple 2-dog race over 2.7 miles, instead he decided to make it an extreme event when he lost his mitten at the start of the race, and after trying various methods of poling and keeping his bare hand warm, he decided to up his own ante and threw the pole into the snow and covered his hand in his sleeve.  He made it around the 2.7 mile course in 11:02 with his dogs Casper and Daikon, 40 seconds slower than Sara Elzy with Chert and Ayla, who after their own mishap at the start recovered well to win the event.

The 2.7 mile 1-dog race had its own adventure with Alina Evans skiing into the strap of Claudia Ihl's downed pole after Claudia and her dog Ginger crashed after encountering Fran Kohl and Jethro on the trail.  When there might have been a little frustration, humor was the main emotion and sportsmanship came into play as Alina picked up the offending pole and carried it a while around the course to give to Claudia, but dropped it when it was evident that it was not needed.

Fran and Jethro won the event in 14:09, followed by Claudia and Ginger (14:51) and Alina and Ledge rounded out the field in 16:55.

The 1.4 mile race had two 2-dog competitors and one single dog team.  Janice Wiegers teamed with Marco and Trance to run the short course in 5:33, followed by Sara Elzey with Shadow and Myst (6:04).  Andy Warwick too the opportunity to run a second race with shelter dog Blue, who ran the distance in 8:05. Many of the dogs racing are fostered or have been adopted through the Fairbanks Shelter.

Every skijorer and volunteer received great prize from the many sponsors who have helped ASPA with a successful season.

Many thanks, too, to all the volunteers who made this Holiday Race happen!!!

Fun Race #4, -10° F
Results for 12/28/05
Story by Carol Kleckner

The first mid week ASPA race was held on Wednesday, December 28th. In keeping with the spirit of the holidays, three participants were awarded special prizes. Brian Charlton for his santa apparel, Fran Kohl for grabbing a dropped ski pole (and an attempt at a loose mitten) on the trail and bringing it to the finish, and Iris Wood who loaned the person who lost the pole and mitten a pole to compete in the 1.4 mile race.

The trail wasn't as icy as the last race, but it was fast and slick and times were fast.

Brian Charlton with Aspen and Sally won the 2 dog 3.5 mile class in 11:57. Amanda Byrd with Borat and Wanda was 2nd in 12:13 and Andy Warwick with Zip and Licorice was 3rd, one second behind Amanda in 12:14.

In the 1 dog class for 3.6 miles Ted Wu led the way with Ty coming across the finish line in 13:30 with Jim Altherr and Sophie 2nd in 23:41.

In the 2 dog 2.7 mile class, Carol Kleckner with Crowe and Pippi was first in 10:34. Marya Lewanski with Blaze and Nellie was 2nd in 11:28. Iris Wood with Silver and Pluto (who could still see the trail quite well despite only having one eye) was 3rd in 11:33 and Mari Hoe Raitto the co-author of  "Skijor with your Dog," rounded out the class in 4th with Duke and Lady in 12:48.

The one dog class for 2.7 miles brought out 3 competitors. First was Claudia Ihl with Ginger in 15:33. 2nd was Fran Kohl and Jethro in 16:30. 3rd was Alina Evans and Ledge in 17:38. For all 3 competitors this was their first ASPA skijor race this year.

Four teams ran in the 2 dog 1.4 mile race. Top prize went to Amanda Byrd with Miley and Tas in 5:07. 2nd place was captured by Doreen Parker McNeill in 5:19 with Snowball and Little Guy and 3rd went to Carol Kleckner with Chanel and Chance in 6:14.

The most interesting team by far though was the 4th place finisher, Pam Groves with Lily, a pint sized terrier mix that probably tops the scales at 20 pounds, and a very large mix breed dog, Frieda. They did the course in 10:12. Pam says that if Frieda had the drive and pulling ability of tiny Lily, they would be a great team!

The last racers of the day were in the 1 dog class for 1.4 miles. Mari Roe-Haitto in her 2nd race of the day took first in 6:20 with Andy Warwick and Blue 2nd in 8:50.

Fun Race #614° F
Results for 3/15/06
Story and results by Carol Kleckner

Aye and a Happy St. Paddy's day to all.

The first Wednesday night fun run was held under clear skies with a touch of the breeze in yee faces.  All blokes and dogs had a lot of fun and a skittle dee dee for all the racers.

Every racer tonight had the luck of the Irish as everyone got a wonderful prize to be picked from a bounty of goodies.

The 8.6 mile race brought out 3 racers...one in each class.  Mike Malvick and his 3 dogs took off first but blimey if Jim Herriges and his 2 dogs didn't catch up with him at the golf course.  But Mike won his class and Jim won his class with 2 dogs.  Kimberley Beckman was pulled along by Iris to post the fastest and only 1 dog time.

Sara Elzey and Carol Kleckner had a close first and 2nd place in the 3 dog 5.6 mile skijor.  Sara grabbed the 4 leaf clover in this class coming in first.

Andy Warwick continued his impressive string of 1st places this year with Zip and Licorice in the 2 dog 3.6 mile class.  Marya Lewanski was 2nd followed by Kristi Downing and Ginger Hamlin.

The largest class of the night was the 1 dog 3.6 mile race.  Ted Wu took the green light and sped around the course arriving in 1st place.  David French, Sara Thornton, Sara Tabbert, Jim Altherr, and Lisa Stuby closed out the distance.   Lisa and her dog Killae took home the green awards for her attire for the day.....green hat, green vest.....green clovers all about and Killae even dressed up in green.

Andy Warwick put on his skis again in the spirit of St. Paddy's day (yee always want to do things more than once!) and raced around the 1.4 mile course with 2 dogs.  Melanie Wike came out to place 2nd and Sara Elzey got the 3rd leaf of the clover.

Dropping down to the 1 dog class for 1.4 mile, Mike Malvick took first with Billie and Kristi Downing and her dog Snuggles (maybe named after her young baby in her arms!) in 2nd. Finishing out the class was Claudia Ihl and Anna Bryan.

And shiver me timbers....the 0.5 mile class had 2 participants. Mikayla Hamlin the young daughter of Ginger Hamlin took first place with her 11 month old pup in her first ever skijor race.  Brandy Birkbigler was 2nd.

Several skijorers and dogs arrived decked out in their best St. Patrick's Day duds.  Lisa Stuby and her dog Killae won top honors for sporting the most green and shamrocks and took home a big green box of treats, a box of green cookies, and a 6-pack of Guinness which Lisa generously distributed to the race volunteers.

Many thanks to the Pat DeRuyter for starting racers, Sunnifa Deehr and Brian Charlton for handling dogs, Sunnifa Deehr, Judy Warwick and Alice Stickney for timing and persevering with a wrist watch after all the stop watches froze, Sara Tabbert and Judy Warwick for helping with results and race director Don Kiely!!!
