2006 International Sled Dog Symposium
Program Schedule

Sponsored by the Alaska Dog Mushers Association, Fairbanks Junior Dog Mushers Association, and the Fairbanks North Star Borough Pioneer Park

Speakers, session titles, and session descriptions are subject to change. Updates will be posted regularly. Speaker names will be linked to biographies as they become available.

All sessions are at the Pioneer Park Centennial Center for the Arts (the civic center) unless otherwise noted. Questions? See the symposium home page or contact Ami Gjestson by email or (907) 488-5621.

Theater sessions will be taped, and the recordings will be available for purchase from Sled Dog Studio after the symposium. The use of recording equipment and cameras (with or without flash) during presentations is prohibited except by authorized press and personnel. Theater presentation audio will be live on the web; a link will be posted shortly before the event.

Friday, October 27th

Trade fair setup in civic center

Early-bird registration and advance registration check-in; snacks available until 5 pm

Avoid the Saturday morning rush! Our staff will be standing by to check you in early. If you registered in advance, you can pick up your name tag and information packet on Friday. If you're paying at the door, beat the cashier lines Saturday morning by registering Friday night.

Trade fair opens for weekend

The trade fair is free to the general public.

The trade fair opens at 4 pm Friday and will be open from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday and 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday. Many vendors will be offering Friday night specials to help celebrate the Yukon Quest's birthday. Come take advantage of these early-bird deals. Your favorite mushing equipment suppliers will be there, as well as clothing specialists, sled builders, informational booths and much more. Check our continually updated list of vendors to see who is coming.

Junior mushing: A free presentation

Curtis Erhart and Sarah Love DVM

Basic care for your sled dogs. A free Fairbanks Junior Dog Mushers presentation.


8 – 9 pm • Theater

Panel: race officials and veterinarians

Mark Nordman, Mike McCowan

Since every race has its own unique flavor, these race officials will discuss what mushers should expect at different races and what is expected of them. A free Mush with PRIDE presentation.


6 – 9 pm • Main floor

Yukon Quest Birthday Party

Celebrate the Quest's 23rd birthday! Enjoy a spaghetti feed, live music, and a no-host bar. Food is free (but donations are gratefully accepted). Memberships and volunteer sign-ups will be available at the door. Drawings will be held. Sponsored by the Yukon Quest.

Yukon Quest Finishers Club meeting

This meeting will include election of officers and discussion of club format, membership, and frequency of meetings.


Saturday, October 28th

Onsite registration and check-in; coffee and doughnuts for sale upstairs on mezzanine

Pay at the door if you didn't register in advance; advance registrants can pick up name tags and information packets in the express lanes. Don't forget to buy or renew your ADMA membership for a $5 club discount.

Mushing: A family affair

Aliy Zirkle and Allen Moore, Egil Ellis and Helen Lundberg, Ken Anderson and Gwen Holdmann

The speakers will discuss what each family member contributes to the building of a successful team.

Back by popular demand. The "Trapline Twins" will share experiences from their unique and fascinating way of life. Along with telling stories, Miki and Julie will talk about the various personalities of dogs and how to train for those differences.

Sarah Love DVM and Diane Preziosi DVM

Dr. Preziosi will discuss allergies, and Dr. Love will speak about the latest news from the International Sled Dog Veterinary Medical Association.

ADMA Fundraising Auction

Is there something you need, from dog food to a good book to a truckload of wood shavings? Maybe some mushing artwork, or a gift certificate to a local restaurant? You will most likely find it at the auction. Join us Saturday eveningfor both silent and outcry auctions to help raise funds for ADMA. Auction funds are used to support the symposium and other ADMA expenses such as trail maintenance and hall repairs. A list of auction items will be posted on the web, and many more items from our trade fair vendors will magically appear Saturday night.

Alaskan stage race 2008

Be in on bringing stage racing back to Alaska!  Frank and Jerry will speak via teleconference from their homes in Wyoming and Oregon on what it takes to develop, promote and hold a world class event.

Veterinary presentation: Keeping your dogs healthy

Arleigh Reynolds DVM, PhD, DACVN

Arleigh will discuss how to prevent and treat common illnesses such as kennel cough, vomiting and diarrhea during the racing season.

Pirena stage race 2006

Andy and Susan Seitz, Kriya Dunlap

Unlike any other sled dog race in the world, the Pirena Stage Race spans three European countries and consists of 15 stages held over the course of two weeks. Come watch a slide show that chronicles the race and the extracurricular activities in Spain, France and Andorra in January 2006.

Yukon Quest Rookie Preparation

Panel discussion with Yukon Quest veterans and officials to prepare mushers for the Yukon Quest 1000 Mile Sled Dog Race. The panel of mushers will share their tips to prepare rookies for the race, then open up the floor for participants to ask questions focused on planning, training and the nuts and bolts of being on the trail. Everyone is welcome, whether you are signed up for the 2007 Yukon Quest, planning for your rookie year in the future, or just interested in what it takes to achieve the honor of becoming a Yukon Quest Finisher. While attendance is not required, the Yukon Quest strongly encourages all rookies registered for the 2007 Yukon Quest to attend. Registration for the symposium is not required to attend.
